Personalise your wedding ring with these ideas in customisation

Your wedding ring is a symbol of your life-long commitment to your partner and having a personalised design can reflect your special relationship. From different metal types to the use of tasteful gemstones, here’s how you can make your wedding ring your own.

A personal touch

Many jewellers can offer their services to completely customise your wedding ring, making the design truly unique to you and your partner. You could even look into melting down family heirlooms and including them in the design.

“Personalising wedding jewellery can be done by incorporating inherited jewellery, giving a whole new meaning to the jewellery piece,” says Gavin Marsh, master jeweller and stone setter at The Diamond Setter.

Engraving is a great option to personalise your wedding ring. You could have you and your partner’s names or initials engraved on the inside of the band, or choose to include the date of your wedding. You could also decide to have a favourite song lyric, quote or your nicknames engraved. Leaf motifs and patterns are also popular to engrave on your wedding ring for a rustic and individual creation.

Written in the stars

Add a subtle touch of colour with gemstones and diamonds adorning your ring band. Both you and your partner could have each other’s birthstones placed along the inside of the band for a subtle hidden detail.

“Personalising wedding rings can be done in a few ways,” continues Gavin. “Engraving is probably the most common and go-to method, but a gemstone setting brings a unique and very special connection to the jewellery.

“Couples opt for their birthstones and these can be on the forefront of the design or used as a more discreet option, setting the stone on the inside of the band, which does not alter the aesthetic of the wedding ring.”

A metal style perfect for you

Experiment with different metal types and appearances for a truly special creation. Consider a hammered ring style that gives texture to an otherwise smooth and polished wedding ring band.

“There are many different designs to choose from and so many more metal types,” says Terry Arthur, director of The Ring Company. “Gold, white gold and platinum are the most popular precious metals and widths vary from 2mm to 6mm, although wider ring sizes are also available.”

If you are struggling to decide on a metal, a two-toned wedding band would make for a unique ring design. Choose to have a gold and silver pairing or silver and rose-gold tones if you opt for this style of wedding band. For a more subtle look, consider having the outer of the ring band one style of metal and the inside another. Whatever your decision, make sure you keep your engagement ring design at the forefront of your mind to complement your wedding ring choice. By creating a cohesive look, both rings should sit in harmony with one another.

“A person’s engagement ring can often influence the choice of wedding ring,” says Terry. “Styles to complement the engagement ring are usually a consideration, especially if the engagement ring is a particular shape.”
